Moving to Oklahoma

We decided to move to Oklahoma during the summer of 2002. We had just visited a friend in Oklahoma and decided that California was just too expensive and we really could not afford to buy a home. We also couldn't see how we could retire in California. It took us a year of planning and saving up money before we could make the move. With the help of a friend we found a house to rent and hired movers to load up all of our belongings. We were a little nervous about the move because neither of us (my husband and I) had jobs. But we were ready for an adventure. Our daughter was excited about moving, but not totally thrilled about moving to Oklahoma. So in October of 2003 we headed for Oklahoma. We had only seen pictures of the house we had rented and we knew it was an old home, but when we walked inside we found that it was a very old home. It had a lot of drafts and that winter it was very, very cold in that house. The house grew on us and we settled in. I found work and went to school at night to get my Associates Degree in Legal Studies. My husband also found work as a truck driver. Things were working out for us in Oklahoma although we both still missed California. We didn't miss the price of renting a house. We were paying $800.00 to rent a 2 bedroom house in California and in Oklahoma that same house was only $550.00. We also did not miss how much it cost to tag our vehicles. California charges an arm and a leg to tag your vehicle. When we moved it cost close to $1100.00 to tag our two vehicles. In Oklahoma, it was only $145.00 to tag both!

What we did miss were the mountains, the sunsets, and the cool evenings. We were living near Yosemite National Park and the scenery was wonderful. We are planning a trip to Medicine Park, Oklahoma since it reminds us of Yosemite National Park.

In April of 2005 we found a cute little house in Newalla, Oklahoma that is on 1.25 acres. It was perfect for us and the price was just right. We only pay $505.00 a month for the house and that includes the property taxes and homeowner's insurance. The same house in California would have a monthly payment of at least $2500.00 and that would be before the property taxes and insurance.

All in all, I say that we made the right decision to move to Oklahoma because the people here are really nice. Our neighbors are wonderful and have always been available to help us out.
